The honest answer to "will a mechanical keyboard make me a faster typist" is: at first, no. After a few weeks, marginally. After a month, the gap is real but it's not where you think it is. It mostly shows up after you've been typing for half an hour, not in your peak burst speed.
This post is the one we wish someone had handed us before we spent $200 on our first mechanical board. The version with the math, the tradeoffs, and the cases where a $30 membrane is actually the right call.
What a "switch" actually is
Every key on a keyboard has a switch underneath it. The switch is the mechanism that decides when a key press registers and how the press feels. Membrane keyboards (the cheap, common kind) use a single rubber sheet for all keys — pressing a key squishes the rubber, which presses two contact layers together. Mechanical keyboards use individual mechanical switches per key, each with its own spring, slider, and contact mechanism.
This matters for typing speed for three reasons that aren't always discussed honestly: actuation distance, tactile feedback, and recovery. Brand, color, sound, RGB — none of these affect your WPM.
Actuation distance — and why it doesn't help as much as people say
"Actuation" is the point in a key's travel where the press registers. On a membrane, that's usually 3–4 millimeters down — close to the bottom of the key's travel. On most mechanical switches, it's 2 mm. On gaming-tuned linear switches like Cherry MX Speed Silver, it's 1.2 mm.
A shorter actuation distance does mean keys register earlier in the press. In theory that lets you type faster. In practice, your finger isn't moving any faster — it's the same finger making the same motion — and the savings end up being on the order of single-digit milliseconds per keystroke, which doesn't move your WPM in any measurable way.
Worse, shorter actuation distances make accidental presses easier. If you rest your fingers on the home row (which you should), a switch that actuates at 1.2 mm will register every time you shift your weight. That's an error you wouldn't have made on a membrane.
Tactile feedback — where the real difference lives
A tactile switch has a bump in the middle of its travel — you feel a small "click" at the point of actuation. Your finger can stop pressing as soon as it feels the bump, instead of slamming the key all the way to the bottom.
This matters more than actuation distance for two reasons. First, it reduces fatigue: you're not bottoming out 6,000 times an hour. Second, it improves accuracy: you get a precise signal for "this key registered" instead of guessing from the visual feedback on screen. After 30 minutes of typing on a tactile switch, your hands are noticeably less tired and your error rate is lower — and lower error rate is where actual WPM gains come from.
Membranes don't have tactile feedback in the same way. There's a vague mushy resistance that doesn't tell you anything precise. Your fingers compensate by bottoming out every press, which over an 8-hour day adds up to real wrist and finger fatigue.
The four switch families that actually matter
Linear (Cherry MX Red, Gateron Yellow, Alpaca)
Smooth top-to-bottom press, no tactile bump. Quiet, fast feedback. Loved by gamers for the predictable, repeatable press; mixed for typing because the lack of feedback makes accuracy work harder. If you already type with good lookahead and don't need physical confirmation per key, linears are fine. If you're still building consistency, skip them.
Tactile (Cherry MX Brown, Holy Panda, T1)
Bump in the middle of the press. Quiet (no audible click), but you feel the actuation. The most common recommendation for typists for a reason: the bump trains good rhythm and you can stop pressing as soon as you feel it. If you're buying your first mechanical for typing, default to tactile.
Clicky (Cherry MX Blue, Kailh Box White, Jade)
Tactile bump plus an audible click. The clack-clack-clack typewriter sound. Beloved by some, hated by office mates. The audible click adds a useful confirmation signal but the noise rules them out for shared spaces and meetings. Get these for a home office only.
Silent tactile / silent linear (Cherry MX Silent Red, Gateron Silent Brown)
Dampened versions of the above. They cost more and feel slightly mushier. Worth it if noise matters; otherwise stick with the standard versions.
What about membranes?
Membranes get unfairly dismissed in keyboard-enthusiast circles. The truth: a well-made membrane (the kind built into a $1,500 laptop, or a quality scissor-switch standalone like the Apple Magic Keyboard) is a fully viable typing surface. Plenty of 120 WPM typists use them.
What you give up: tactile precision (most), durability (membranes wear out around 5–10 million keypresses; mechanicals are rated 50–100M), and customizability. What you gain: weight, portability, price, quietness, and no learning curve.
The membranes that genuinely hold back your typing are the cheap $15 ones with mushy uneven response. If you're using one of those, an upgrade is justified — but the upgrade doesn't have to be mechanical. A $50 scissor-switch board is a huge improvement and may be enough.
What about laptop keyboards?
Laptop keyboards are membranes with very short key travel (usually 1–1.5 mm) and minimal tactile feedback. They're optimized for thinness, not typing. Most fast typists are 10–15% slower on a laptop than on their preferred external board. This is normal and not something to fix; it's the physics of a 1 mm travel distance and a flat resting position.
If you're stuck typing on a laptop, the only meaningful improvement is to raise the screen to eye level and use an external keyboard. The laptop's built-in keyboard isn't going to get faster.
The actual recommendation
If you're a typist (not a gamer, not a custom-build hobbyist) and you want a keyboard that demonstrably helps:
- Budget under $50: a decent scissor-switch membrane like the Logitech K380 or Apple Magic Keyboard. Better than a $200 mechanical board with the wrong switches for you.
- Budget $50–$150: an entry tactile mechanical board — Keychron K-series, Drop ENTR, or similar with Cherry MX Brown or Gateron Brown switches. This is the sweet spot for most people.
- Budget $150+: now you're paying for build quality, customizability, and acoustics, not typing speed per se. The marginal WPM gain from a $400 board over a $120 one is approximately zero. Get the $400 board because you want it, not because you think it'll make you fast.
The harder truth
The keyboard you have right now probably isn't the thing capping your speed. Posture, lookahead, accuracy discipline, and the cumulative hours of deliberate practice are. A $300 keyboard does not skip the 100 hours of typing practice between you and your next 20 WPM.
Buy a better keyboard if you'll enjoy using it more — that alone is a good enough reason, because typing more is the actual route to typing faster. But don't expect the keyboard to do the work.
